*OBD ECU data information
The Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) recommended that VIN data be available from the vehicle’s computer, SAE J1979, Mode 09 (1997). CARB mandates that all 2005 models report the VIN from one ECU per SAE J1979 (Title 13, California Code Regulations, Section 1968.2(f) (4.8)). Some 2000 model year vehicles started adding the VIN and many began in model years 2002.
As manufacturers comply with the standard to add the VIN our software will be ready to pull it out without having to upgrade it. VINs were to be mandatory starting in 2007.
